While credit cards can be used wisely by smart consumers and shoppers, they are not all alike. It is important to research the various types of credit cards which are available in order to find the right match for a particular individual. Although it may seem that choosing a card with the lowest interest rates is the best fit, that is not necessarily the case. A potential credit card holder’s lifestyle, needs, credit rating and other factors influence credit card choice.

Consumers often need to compare retail store credit cards with those offered by banks or other financial institutions. Many store credit cards offer benefits such as giving a certain percentage of funds to local schools but that benefit may be offset by interest rates as high as 25% or more! So it is very important to be clear about interest rates for retail store credit cards. Yes, it is certainly convenient to be able to charge items at neighborhood stores but be sure that ease of purchase doesn’t come with a very high cost. It is also important to check annual fees and/or costs which may not be easily disclosed up front.

New laws are going into effect which limit the changes that credit card companies can make without notifying their customers. Even so, it is important to read the fine print of credit card agreements and be sure that every single section is clearly explained. Also, some companies have very high penalties for going over one’s credit limit. If not used wisely, credit card payments, fees and interest rates can quickly get out of hand and it can be hard to pay off the debt.

Before choosing a credit card, it is wise to check your credit rating. Consumers are generally allowed one free credit rating per year and can be kept aware of their outstanding debt and any gaps in payment history. If the credit rating is high, the potential card owner has bargaining power and there is no reason to choose a credit card with unreasonable terms and interest rates. Ideally, all charges should be paid off monthly or customers should opt to pay far more than the minimum fees so that charges and interest rates don’t become ridiculously high.

When it comes to the variety of credit cards out there, they run the gamut from secured cards (prepaid credit cards) to those which have high credit lines and interest. Some are particularly useful to travelers, offering bonus miles for every ticket purchased. If used responsibly, credit cards which offer free miles can add up to potential savings on future trips. Some of these cards allow all purchases, whether for trips or not, to count towards bonus miles.

Retail store credit cards, as noted above, may offer special discounts or advantages (the store is nearby) but have high interest rates. Also, these cards are generally limited to specific stores, a potential problem if the card holder travels to a state where retail stores differ and the particular store isn’t in that state.

Other charge cards, such as Visa or Mastercard, can be used nationwide and in many different stores. However, some card agreements require the balance to be paid monthly or have high annual fees or special costs. If the charges can’t be paid in full each month, a low interest rate is vital.

Secured cards can be an excellent way for parents to make sure college students establish a credit rating without having the ability to rack up huge charges. As the name implies, the card requires a deposit to secure a specific credit limit. The advantage? This can be a good way to start building a credit history and establish a credit rating.

It is very important to check a card’s grace period, the time between receiving a credit card statement by mail or online and the date payment is due. Grace periods may change suddenly. Typically, today’s credit cards have grace periods of about 25 days but some offer fewer days. If payments aren’t made within the grace period, credit ratings may suffer and high fees may be charged as a penalty.
